Blessing of the Backpacks
ATTENTION:
Parents and Children of
The start of school is just
around the corner. We hope you will be with us on Sunday,
August 24 for “Blessing of the Backpacks” during the “Time with Children”
in our eleven o’clock service. We want to pray for our schools and lift you, your parents, teachers, administrators and all school staff in prayer.
Please be with us. We have a small back to school gift for children of all ages.
You are welcome to bring your
backpack with you to church and bring it
forward with you at a “Time for Children”.

Summer Schedule
Sunday School at Market Square continues year round for all ages each week from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Because people tend to travel in the summer, we have fewer in attendance and the groups for children and youth are broadly graded.
Elementary grades 1-5 meet in room 315 on the third level and all the youth meet in the youth room on the upper level. Child care is available in the nursery and a preschool class in the pre-school room next to the nursery. Both these rooms are off of Fellowship Hall on the lower level and the music corridor. All the children and youth classes use Seasons of the Spirit, a lectionary based curriculum.

Elementary children at Market Square are invited to go on a journey this fall:
A spiritual journey!
A sacred journey!
A journey to find
God within!
Our children will experience The Way of the Child during the Sunday School hour. Each child and adult will be asked to remove their shoes as they enter the sacred space of the room.
The journey takes place through 6 interactive stations every week:
Gazing which is the practice of meditation and listening,
Sand gives the tactile experience of retelling the Biblical story,
Art allows children to create an art prayer,
Journaling is a chance to write your thoughts about God in words or pictures,
Reading silently or aloud from a book relating to the topic of the session while sitting on soft pillows on the floor.
No trip would be complete without traveling music so we will learn new songs and listen to reflective sacred music.
The teaching team is excited to invite your child on the journey with them.

New Mexico Mission Trip – They are all safely home now, but earlier 15 youth joined 4 chaperones and 22 adults from the congregation for a cross country adventure in New Mexico from June 14 –21. We stayed in the Ghost Ranch retreat center in downtown Santa Fe and worked in a small village, Penasco, about an hour and a half north of Santa Fe. Part of the group ran a Vacation Bible School for local children. Others tore out and replaced three windows at the Emmanuel Presbyterian Church. While in New Mexico, we experienced its unique culture by visiting ancient Indian pueblos, feasting on Mexican food, and enjoying Georgia O’Keeffe’s home and artwork. Details at the blog here.
Massanetta – Eight middle school youth from Market Square and three young people from Derry Presbyterian Church attended the Massanetta Middle School Conference June 24 – 27. They were accompanied by Kelly Wiant- Thralls and Katie Poticher, the summer intern at Derry. This year’s theme was Leaps and Bounds based on the story of the paralytic who is lowered through the roof and changed forever by his encounter with Jesus (Luke 5:17-26).

Adult Bible Class Conference Room
The Adult Bible Class continues in the summer and meets in the Conference Room. The adult class is a Bible study class. They use The Present Word curriculum and will focus on Christ as God’s son, intercessor, leader, redeemer, eternal, teacher, healer, servant and Messiah.
