The Youth of Market Square planned the entire service, including selection of music, theme, prayers, and sermon. The Alleluia choir and the Children's Choir sang special music. The sacrament of the Lord's Supper was also observed, with the youth serving communion. Kelly Wiant-Thralls, Associate Pastor, recognized the seniors with special words about each of them. The service theme focused on the words we use--welcome, confess, forgive, offer, learn, nourish. These words were written on boxes that built the service, and then were taken down as the service ended. The two youth who delivered the sermon spoke of the gifts we all bring--and during the offering, each congregant was asked to list on a blue card his or her gift, that was then placed on the board at the front of the sanctuary along with the regular offering. Holy Week Photos taken during Holy Week, 2008. Palm Sunday was celebrated with solemnity beginning with a processional hymn. Music was provided by the Children's choir, the Alleluia choir, and the Adult Choir. At the close of the service, the paraments were removed, and congregants departed the sanctuary in silence. Easter Sunday was celebrated with joy--the sanctuary brightly decorated with spring flowers. The banners for Holy Week trace the progression of Christ's journey to the cross, and include the crown of thorns, the palms, the elements used in the Last Supper, and the cross itself. Children listened in awe as Associate Pastor Kelly showed her Easter basket contents. Senior Pastor Jim Brown received new members, Rosie Magee offered the pastoral prayer. With the new Christ candle in place, congregants listened to the sounds of Widor's 6th symphony emanate from the organ with Director of Music Eric Riley at the keyboard. Second Sunday in Advent Photos taken on the 2nd Sunday of Advent, December 9, 2007. The Advent banners, hanging in the Atrium entrance way, were made by Kelly Wiant-Thralls' mother. The second Advent candle for HOPE was lit. Jim and Elizabeth Terry helped greet worshippers. The Rev. Jim Brown preached on "Gifts That Mean Something" and the Rev. Kelly Wiant-Thralls talked with children about how a trumpet mouthpiece without a trumpet doesn't work. She compared that to John the Baptist being the mouthpiece for God. One young worshipper listened very intently. The flowers were given by the Murray family "to the glory of God and in memory of Elizabeth (Sue) Stone Everhart, Ann Murray Fox and William L. and Geraldine M. Murray. The new members who were received were: John (Skip) and Susan (Sue) Bowers; Jenny Gicking and Brett Marcy; Christina and Kyle Martin; and Pat Frysinger. Bistro 2007 Photos taken on the 1st Sunday of Advent, December 2, 2007--also Bistro Sunday. The Children's Choir sang under the direction of Jane Bartlett, and the sacrament of communion was observed, by intinction. Immediately following church, Market Square held its annual Bistro with soups, breads and cookies all made and donated by friends and members of the church. All the proceeds of this event go to benefit HELP Ministries, part of Christian Churches United. Fellowship Hall is transformed with twinkling lights and a Christmas tree. Bistro attendees gather, waiting to enter Fellowship Hall and make choices about which soup to enjoy, which cookie and fruit to eat. All the while, the diners are entertained by the sweet sounds of Still Simple Gifts. Many church members, young and old, help with all the work--from selling tickets to serving tables and bread. Kitchen helpers and table waiters and dishwashers make this event an annual treat. Copyright © 2008 Market Square Presbyterian Church – All rights reserved |
